Diana went into work this morning early. Allison woke up, and was playing happily in her crib when I went in to get her. But then she cried for Mommy a little (not too unusual), and didn't quite seem herself.
At breakfast, she complained that her tummy hurt, and didn't eat very much. I felt her forehead, and she did feel pretty warm. I took her temperature, and she did indeed have a fever. I called Dorrie to say that Allison wouldn't be coming in today, and likewise called my work and said I wouldn't make it.
Allison and I hunkered down for some Little Mermaid. We took a walk, and played around the house, but she got progressively hotter and more lethargic through the day. She was very cuddly (highly unusual) and we watched most of Cars together. My mom came over for lunch and while I put Allison down for her nap. I took her temperature before naptime, and it was like 103.7 and 104.0. Not good.
I called the doctor and was able to make and appointment for this afternoon. Diana met me there. The nurse clocked Allison's temperature at a blistering 104.7. Holy balls. The doctor was sympathetic and reassuring, but didn't appear to be overly concerned. I mean, we weren't rushed to into a wailing ambulance or anything. She looked in Allison's ears and gasped when she looked into her throat. Very red and raw, apparently. A throat culture (Allison was a real trooper for this) for strep came back negative, so the vague diagnoses of "a virus" was made. ("A virus is what we doctors call 'very, very small'") Motrin and luke-warm baths for the fever should help, and we should be in touch if Allison didn't perk up (she was almost falling asleep in the doctor's office).
Thankfully, things are looking up. 45 minutes after the Motrin and a warm bath later, and her fever has dropped significantly. She's definitely perked up, walking around and playing in her princess dress. I was kind of hoping for a positive strep diagnosis, so at least we knew what the deal was and could properly address it. But we're in kind of a watch-and-see mode for the weekend, I think.
Needless to say, I've been pretty stressed out all day. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a few emotional tears in private. It's scary stuff to see your kid burning up and feel so helpless.

Update: Shortly after this post, I left to pick up Roberto's.
When I got back, a completely different kid was waiting for me. Happy, perky, running around and laughing. She pounded down dinner and squealed with delight at her silly jokes.
Unbelievable.
