Orkut
My old high school friend Eric invited me to Orkut (thanks!), so I'm now aboard the latest social networking jobby. Looks actually pretty interesting. Like friendster, but with groups you can join (like Yahoo groups or message boards) on any variety of subjects (you can make your own, too, I suppose). Other features for meeting friends and dates, which I haven't really explored yet. Looks a lot more functional and cooler than Friendster, so far.
Anyone interested in an invite? I feel lonely with only one friend. :)

Life is too short for socks with holes or un-stretchy elastic.
The other night, Diana and I watched "Finding Nemo". Cute movie. I (as I was the first time I saw it) am completely blown away by the water animation. Just incredible. After the movie, Diana stumbled off to bed. I thought "I'll just play a *bit* of Civilization III". By the time I pulled myself out of the game, it was 12:30am on a school night. Ugh. But man, what a fun game that is.
Work has been going well. I've been assigned my very own little project, which is fun. I think I work better in groups. Not because I have to do less work or anything, but I really enjoy the collaboration and energy. I guess there's pros and cons each way.
My end of the year review is coming up. In the past, when I think I've had a great year, I've gotten a decent review. When I think I've just had a decent year, I had a great review. So, hard to tell how things are going to be. I'm hoping for a few extra dollars to spend on a new computie, though!
I've been wanting to upgrade since this time last year, but houses and things sort of put a kibosh in those plans. If I upgrade or buy a new system, then I should have enough leftover parts to make another computer for Diana, which I think would be good to have. And if we have two computers, then we'll need a new, big desk. But a big desk probably won't fit in what's now my office, so I switch my office and the guestroom. But that room is really dark, so we'll probably need a new nice light in there. As you can see, it's a lot of work. :)
I've put off reading "A Game Of Thrones" for now. I'd only read a couple chapters before deciding that it was a good enough book that when I finished it, I'd want to read the next one. And the one after that. So I decided to sneak in "The Da Vinci Code" beforehand. I read the first bits last night, and it looks like it will be a lot of fun.
And the Superbowl is coming up this weekend. I just bought a square in a pool at work. I love square pools! I'm going to be watching the game at Baditude's pops' house, which traditionally has been a lot of fun. Should be a good time
Finally, the World of Warcraft beta testing signups start today! I've been watching this game for a long time, now, and am pretty excited for a chance to play. It sounds like a really fun mix between Diablo II and a traditional MMORPG. I hope I get picked! If I do, I'll definitely need to upgrade my machine..... :)

Yay golf!
Today, Diana and I got up and met up with Norm and Teri and Iwan at a local executive golf course, and enjoyed a nice round of golf. Neither Diana nor I have golfed in a LONG time, but Diana hit the range this week and did well. I ended up shooting my best round ever. The course is a par 58 (two par 4s, the rest par 3), and I shot 7 over. I had all pars and 7 bogeys. No birdies, but incredibly, no double bogeys. This was extremely satisfying to me. I'd say I was lucky, but I don't think you can get lucky for a full round. During the day, though, I didn't feel like I was particularly in the groove or whatever. I just felt relaxed and comfortable and having a good time. So, that was nice.
After lunch, we hit up the Nova for pizza and whatnot, and then went our seperate ways. As usual, I had such a good time with my friends, just laughing and having a good time. If only Baditude liked golf.....
After lunch, we headed to my parents house, where I was going to help my dad set up his brand new wireless home network and cable connection, but lo and behold, he'd already set it up together, all by himself. I'm very proud. Now they have a nice fast cable connection, which I'm sure they'll enjoy.
Diana and I were going to meet up with Norm and Teri to see a movie in the afternoon, but we were pretty pooped and still felt pretty gross after golf, so decided we might be better off postponing and going home and getting cleaned up, instead. Maybe we'll try to catch it tomorrow. Anyways, we decided to rent "SeaBiscuit" and "Finding Nemo" in case we need a movie for tonight. And we've just spent the last hour or so in front of the fire reading our books (I just started "A Game of Thrones"). So, a very nice day so far.

Hrm. Comments seem to be not working. Get what I pay for, I guess.
I now have full perms to link to Discostup's blog. Check the left side of this page for the link.
I'm golfing tomorrow for the first time in a LONG time. With D'ster, Iwan, Norm and Teri. Should be tons o' fun.
Yay.

Blogs and such.
My friend Dr. Mick, in his own questioning of the whole blogging phenomenon, has brought up a whole big discussion on blogs. What to write? Who will read it? Does anyone really care what you write? Will your parents or co-workers find it, and what will they think? So I thought I'd blog about it... :)
This journal (I really don't like the word "blog" for some reason) was spawned from the fact that I've always wanted to keep a journal. Only I can't handwrite for shit, and I never got a good system set up to keep a good journal on a computer. Anything more than writing a series of text files seemed like a lot of work. Blogging sites had all this functionality all built in, and seemed like the way to go.
The primary reason for this blog is to provide me a space to keep a basic journal of my day-to-day goings on, and an outlet to tell a funny story or save a memory. While I'm very aware that others read this, I also don't care a whole lot if they do or don't. I could password protect my blog tomorrow, and I think I'd still write the same sort of stuff. The point is, it's for me. I just leave it unlocked on the off chance that anyone out there wants to read. And apparently some people do. And some (noteably Nuthin' Doin' Iwan) don't, and that's fine too.
But as Norm has kind of touched on, I wouldn't consider this a true journal in the traditional sense if I can't write down all my most secret hopes and desires and rants. As I said, I remain acutely aware that others can read it. I try not to gripe about stuff that might hurt feelings. I don't write stuff that I don't want my parents to know about (like my online poker experience! Ha!). I try not to complain about friends, co-workers, former girlfriends, whatever, simply because I'm always aware in the back of my mind that they could very easily read it. And a coworker once did find this, and I was really glad that I hadn't bashed anyone from work.
So there's a tradeoff between having a private place to hide my secrets, and a public forum to share a bit of my life. And for whatever reason, I've chosen the latter. Probably mostly due to the fact that I don't have a whole lot of stuff to hide, and when I do need to gripe about something, Diana's a good sounding board. But that's pretty rare.
So, while I just wrote a paragraph up there saying I don't care if people read it, that's not exactly 100% accurate. It's a nice side effect that people are able to read it. I know my parents like to read about what I've been up to. And occasionally people might even be a little entertained.
As Diana blossoms into a real live teacher, a whole new crop of people might find this blog by searching for her name. This might require some changes on my part, as she might not want students to know what she did over the weekend or whatever. We'll see what develops in that front.
I have no idea, though, if this journal is representitive of blogs. Lots of people use theirs as their own little personally political sounding board. Or to brag about themselves. Or to get into a big network of blogs and meet people. Or to tell secrets (I recently read a blog by a girl name Laura, who was a "cutter", and talked about cutting herself to relieve emotional pain... intense stuff).
So, I just wanted to offer my own opinion about what this journal is about, for what it's worth. And I'm tired of typing now.

So...
I had a really nice relaxing 3-day weekend. Diana worked quite a bit, as it's finals time for her students (I wonder if any of them have found this blog yet?), so I had lots of time to sit around in my comfies and play computer games and veg out.
I beat the Prince of Persia game I was playing, which was pretty satisfying. Not a great game, but not a bad one either. Thank Sara for the gift card which got me the game!
Diana and I took a nice walk this weekend, where we ran into our next door neighbor out working on his yard. He asked if we'd found a gardner, which I took to mean that he was looking for one. I hope it wasn't a helpful hint that our yard looks like shit. Anyhoo, we got to talking, and he was nice enough to lend us his hedge trimmer. So the next day I went to town and trimmed a bunch of stuff back, which was satisfying. It's amazing how the right tool can make a job a lot easier.
Sunday night we went and watched the first disc of "Band of Brothers" at Eron's pops' house. Very good watching. I'm not sure how many discs are left (6 or 12?), but hopefully we can rent it or borrow it or something and continue watching.
I also finished my book, which was pretty good. There was a little puzzle/encryption thing at the end which I figured out a couple pages before the characters in the book (not because I'm a genius, but it was a pretty easy little riddle). So it was pretty silly to watch them run around and try to figure it out themselves. The final page in the book (after the story) had some sort of code in it which I'm letting rattle around in my head. I think that means I'm going to be the last person on earth to read The Da Vini Code, coming up next.
That's about all I got. Real World tonight!

Last night after work, I headed out to Eron's for a li'l "Settlers of Cataan" date. He'd been chatting with an old high school alum about playing, and so we got together and did just that. It's a pretty fun game. A really nice mix of luck, strategy, and fast-talking trades. I liked it, and look forward to playing again. I'm also looking forward to a full-day Civ-fest. I hope we can make that happen at some point.
And today for lunch some work boys and I did a little lunchtime geocaching! A group of six of us headed out and and nerded it up. It was a lot of fun. We looked pretty out of place with all of us out hiking in our work clothes, GPS's in hand, but we were having a good time. It was a nice hike, one mile each way. We found the cache without any real difficulty, which was nice. Everyone had a good time, and we're already looking forward to the next one.
And now, hopefully cruise through a Friday afternoon at work, and enjoy a nice, long, 3-day weekend! Huzzah.

I've got a new thing to try: slack-rope walking.
I remember as a kid climbing on fences and trying to balance on 'em. This weekend, when Diana and I went to the beach for lunch, there was a chain looped between posts forming a little fence. The chain wasn't very slack, but it certainly wasn't pulled completely taut. I'd just eaten a great lunch in the warm sunshine in a beautiful spot with a beautiful wife, and was feeling giddy with happiness. Trying to balance on the chain seemed like a good idea, so I clambered on up there! Diana said "Adman..." in a warning, "I'm not so sure this is a good idea" tone. It took a tenative try or two to get situated, but I got up there, one leg on the chain, the other out in space, arms poised for balance.
At first my leg was totally wobbly as I struggled to get it under control. During that time, everything else was gone. No ocean roar, no people around, nothing but me and that chain. It was a really neat feeling. I really like doing an activity that requires such intense concentration that there isn't room for anything else.
I got my wobblyness under control, and was able to shift my weight and take an actual step. Then another. By that time, I was about at the end of the chain, and I hopped off, I'm sure with a huge shit-eating grin on my face. Diana hugged me proudly and gave me a kiss and told me she loved me.
Unfortunately, there's no place around the house to set up a rope. I'll have to work on that.

Busy weekend!
Let's see here. Lots to talk about.
Friday night, me and D and Iwan headed over to Baditudes house for a rousing game of "Civilization: The Board Game". The four of us were joined by Eryn's work-boy Dig-Dug, so we had a pretty full posse for the game. The game itself was a whole lot of fun. The basic idea is you start out with a city and settler, and work on expanding your little civilization. There are lots of neat aspects of the game, not the least of which is multiple ways to win (including world domination (a la Risk)), or technological superiority, and otherwise. Winning was hardly a problem, though, as the game advances through 4 different eras, and we made it through 1 in about 4 hours of play. Granted, it was a learning game that went pretty slow at the start, and apparently the other eras go faster. I hope we can get together a full day game, though, as I think that would be a lot of fun.
Saturday morning, Diana did some tutin' while I did some odd chores. We then packed up a lunch and headed down to the beach and watched the pups run and play. It was a nice day, and I was once again reminded of how infrequently I go to the beach, and how I'd like to go more. We then headed to the mall and I picked up the new "Prince of Persia" game (thanks Smartin for the gift certificate!). Diana had a gift card as well, so we made out like bandits!
I played some PoP that night. The controls were pretty frustrating at first. You play the game from an over-the-shoulder point of view (a la Tomb Raider). The camera is semi-automated, as well as controlled by the mouse, so I spent a lot of time fighting with the computer for control. Once I figured out that this was a pretty typical console-type game, I just let the camera go on it's own, and just adjust it as needed. Much better.
Saturday night, Diana and I watched (one of our copies of) "Amelie". Cute movie! I liked it the first time I saw it, and I think even more the second.
Sunday, Diana had more tutin' to do in the morning. My dad came over, and we worked on replacing the faucet fixtures in the guest bathroom. It was a lot more work than I anticipated, mostly because of the decrepit state of the faucets that were in there now. The metal was completely corroded, and things that were supposed to unscrew from each other were basically cemented together. It took a lot of WD-40 and strength and teamwork, but we finally got all the old stuff out and installed the new bits. I had to make a quick trip to Home Depot to get some supplies, but by the end of the evening, water was flowing with nary a leak! Not too shabby. My dad came supplied with a wealth of tools and knowledge, which made the job a lot easier and more fun. I even heard him say the 'f' word for the very first time in my life! Very exciting.
My dad brought with him some tapes from the Time-Life collection of the original Muppet show, and we watched two episodes of that that evening. It was a lot of fun, and brought back many happy memories. Then a little jacuzzin', and bedtime!
All in all, a nice, full weekend.

So, let's see.
Work has calmed down a little bit, which is nice. I've come home before dinner time for a couple nights.
Diana's schooling has started up again. She modified her work schedule, and is taking a class online, so she's going to be home a lot more, which is great. I think every other evening she'll be home by the time I get home, and every other morning she doesn't start until noon'ish. So I'm happy for her for that.
I have some new things in my life which are probably not worth mentioning. New Favorite TV Show: Mythbusters. This show rocks. Two geeky-yet-loveable guys test urban legends by building crazy contraptions. For instance, are breast implants susceptible to changes in air pressure (like, on an airplane?) They made a model human using forensic gel, implanted implants, and built a pressure tank thing. Good fun.
New Girl: Shania Twain. I was flipping through the channels the other evening, and caught her on TV, and holy crap, she is absolutely beautiful.
The new Real World started last night. What a complete mess that show is going to be. Usually the first show is the roommates all moving in and getting to know each other, and generally pretty mundane. Let's see if I get this right: Masshole, Meatheed, Southern Belle, Florida party-girl, Gentle Black Man, Non-Descript (thusfar) NoCal Girl, and Fatally Ill Rebel make up the motley crew. Most of the show revolved around them getting wasted, going in the jacuzzi, getting wasted, sitting on the porch getting wasted... On night 1, Rebel stumbles from jacuzzi to bed, passes out, and THEN throws up. Meatheed breaks up with his 5 year girlfriend after only a couple days of temptation of nubile roomates. It's going to be a complete trainwreck... the kind you (at least, I) can't not watch.
That is all. I've been at work for a while now, and no voicemail, and no peeps needing me yet. Maybe it will be a slow day? (I've now officially jinxed myself).

WORK!
I was at work all day yesterday.
I'll be at work all day today.
It's a little nuts around here, as we've officially entered the parallel testing phase of the project. We're putting out fires left and right, which is both good and bad. Good that we're putting 'em out. Bad that they exist. Oh well.
I finally had a break to get some food and so forth. I can only be "on" for so long ("Activate... super geek!")
I actually forgot it was Sunday today. Even when I walked into the break room and football was on TV. I thought to myself "Weird... why is there football on Friday?" Speaking of which, you know that feeling you get when you forget that it's Friday, and you realize you have a whole weekend ahead of you? Imagine forgetting it was Sunday, and realizing you have a full week ahead of you. Bleck.
Britney Spears got married, but is getting it annulled. What's the point?

Happy 2004!
Last night was fun. Iwan and Sara and Eryn and Heather came over to our pad, and we hung out and had dinner and played Trivial Pursuit and generally had good times. I traditionally haven't liked New Years much, because I've always had high expectations that were never met. So it was nice to just hang out, casual style.
Diana and I went to UTC today, and saw that the Gamekeeper was going out of business. Everything was 20% off, and we also had a gift card from my work as a little holiday present. So we picked up 400 nice'ish poker chips for relatively cheap. The chips aren't as nice as I'd like as a final draft, but they're a lot better than the plastic mismatched ones we've been using. Diana and I just played heads up for the last hour or so. Lots of fun. I wanted to use my EB card for The Prince of Persia, but EB was out. Boo.
I've had a nice relaxing work schedule, for a change, which has been good. Work on Monday, used my "floating holiday" on Tuesday, work on Wednesday, holiday today, and half-day tomorrow. Yay.
Oh, by the way... did you know that a 1 yen coin weighs exactly one gram and is 1 centimeter in radius? Coolest ever!
