One of Diana's students died over the weekend.

Last Tuesday, Diana noticed this girl was a little spacey and out of it. Diana asked if she was ok, and the girl said she was just having a bad day.
Wednesday and Thursday, the student was out sick.
Friday, she went to the hospital and diagnosed with some form of bacterial meningitis.
By Friday afternoon she was unconscious.
By Saturday, she was basically brain dead, and family and friends were visiting to say goodbye.
Sunday morning, they turned off life support.

So sad. :(

I went golfing on Saturday morning with Iwan and a friend of my parents who is visiting from Montana. While golfing, Diana called the nurse on call and told her about her student, and the nurse said "get to urgent care!" So, a little freaked out, she did. At the hospital, the doctor made some calls, and everyone seemed to agree that the bacteria that causes bacterial meningitis is everywhere. He said they could do a throat culture on Diana, but even if it came back positive, it wouldn't really mean anything. The important thing is to watch for the symptoms and come back if anything develops, which is extremely unlikely. They could have given her a boost of antibiotics, but since she's pregnant, that wasn't a good idea.

So, while at lunch after golf, Iwan comes up to me (looking a little bit concerned), saying he had a voicemail from Diana, and hoped this made sense to me: "She's at the hospital, and said that there isn't anything they can do for her, so they're discharging her." Luckily I had some idea of what that meant, otherwise I might have really freaked out.

I feel so bad for her parents, and her friends. Healthy high school kids aren't supposed to just get sick and die.
